Para ayudar a que estas especies contin\u00faen viviendo en nuestra \u00e1rea se debe llevar a cabo un desarrollo bien informado y respetando al m\u00e1ximo el bosque y corredores naturales existentes. Es primordial conservar lo que ya existe puesto que es lo que los animales ya conocen y es donde encuentran su alimento, refugio y descanso, son h\u00e1bitats funcionales. Un proceso de regeneraci\u00f3n de un bosque que se inicie ahora tardar\u00e1 a\u00f1os en ser funcional, por lo que la extendida idea de \u201ccortar uno, plantar diez\u201d no es del todo acertada. Adem\u00e1s, es necesario restaurar zonas degradadas lo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido posible. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se han perdido grandes \u00e1reas de bosque en la pen\u00ednsula debido al desarrollo urban\u00edstico y la ganader\u00eda, lo cual ha hecho que la conectividad se haya visto perjudicada. La conectividad boscosa hace referencia a la cercan\u00eda entre copas de los \u00e1rboles de un bosque y \u00e1reas de conectividad ecol\u00f3gica que permite la circulaci\u00f3n de diferentes especies por ellos. Los animales necesitan esa conectividad para que exista un intercambio de informaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica y la especie pueda continuar su evoluci\u00f3n. Adem\u00e1s, tanto los animales arb\u00f3reos como terrestres, pueden dispersar semillas, lo que hace que las propias especies de plantas tambi\u00e9n extiendan su h\u00e1bitat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hay muchos animales terrestres que pierden la vida en atropellos, por lo que otra de las soluciones que se presentan es la reducci\u00f3n de la velocidad al manejar y respetar la se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n de pasos de fauna. Aunque en ocasiones la se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n es insuficiente, debemos ser conscientes de la gran cantidad de animales en la zona. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somos Congos lleva un registro de los accidentes de fauna y solo este a\u00f1o (hasta el primero de agosto) han registrado 28 accidentes de mono congo, 24 por electrocuci\u00f3n. Entre el resto de causas se encuentran ataques de perros, posibles envenenamientos y atropellos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
En estos 28 accidentes han muerto 23 individuos, el 79% de los reportados. Algunos mueren instant\u00e1neamente y a algunos se les tiene que aplicar la eutanasia en el centro de rescate debido a la gravedad de las heridas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Un rescate supone la movilizaci\u00f3n de varias personas, muchas de las veces personal voluntario de Somos Congos, quienes denuncian que el SINAC (Sistema Nacional de \u00c1reas de Conservaci\u00f3n), qui\u00e9n deber\u00eda atender estos casos, carece de personal (en la actualidad hay un funcionario que atiende Jicaral, Lepanto, Paquera y C\u00f3bano) y los guardaparques de Cabo Blanco, carecen de presupuesto para el mantenimiento y combustible de sus veh\u00edculos. De hecho la asociaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro Somos Congos adquiri\u00f3 el a\u00f1o pasado, gracias a donaciones privadas, un veh\u00edculo que funciona como ambulancia y que est\u00e1 autorizado para este fin, ya que recordemos, trasladar fauna silvestre es ilegal en Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
Muchos de los animales rescatados se estaban trasladando Wild Sun Rescue en Cabuya, pero este centro ahora est\u00e1 lleno y no puede aceptar m\u00e1s pacientes por lo que los animales rescatados se est\u00e1n transportando a Rescate Wildlife (antiguo Zooave) en Alajuela. Gracias a la reciente colaboraci\u00f3n entre Somos Congos, SINAC y Costa Rica Green Airways, los animales se transportan en avioneta en tan solo 45 minutos desde el sur de la pen\u00ednsula de Nicoya hasta el aeropuerto de Alajuela.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adem\u00e1s de los gastos de transporte, el gasto aproximado por mes de cada animal en un centro de rescate ronda los 700,000 colones, unos 1,200 d\u00f3lares estadounidenses seg\u00fan la gravedad de las heridas. Muchos de los animales, en concreto los monos, si son admitidos a una edad muy joven, pueden permanecer en el centro hasta dos a\u00f1os. Estos gastos se afrontan de manera privada por las organizaciones sin fines de lucro, como Somos Congos y los propios centros de rescate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel Guti\u00e9rrez es presidente de Somos Congos y nos comparte la dureza de los casos que atienden \u201cen ocasiones no hay de otra que ponerse los guantes y ayudar en la atenci\u00f3n primaria al m\u00e9dico veterinario, y se hace por la adrenalina y la angustia de ver al mono en ese estado. Despu\u00e9s de ese momento de tensi\u00f3n, uno se bajonea much\u00edsimo an\u00edmicamente pero hay que seguir porque probablemente uno o dos d\u00edas despu\u00e9s vas con otro caso igual o peor al anterior\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
La situaci\u00f3n es cr\u00edtica y los esfuerzos voluntarios de las organizaciones locales son cada vez mayores para tratar de combatir y prevenir la destrucci\u00f3n del h\u00e1bitat del mono congo y otras especies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
Dentro de estos reportes tambi\u00e9n hay espacio para las buenas noticias, y es que en los \u00faltimos meses se han logrado liberar de vuelta en el bosque a 4 monos. Somos Congos nos cuenta la historia de Trini, el primer Congo en volar desde la pen\u00ednsula hasta Alajuela debido a un accidente por electrocuci\u00f3n m\u00faltiple en el que su compa\u00f1era falleci\u00f3 y la cr\u00eda de esta contin\u00faa internada en Rescate Wildlife. Trini ingres\u00f3 al centro en marzo y entre las distintas atenciones y cirug\u00edas estuvo la amputaci\u00f3n de su brazo derecho. Afortunadamente tuvo una recuperaci\u00f3n y rehabilitaci\u00f3n exitosa y el d\u00eda 23 de agosto pudo volar de regreso a casa donde fue liberado junto a Tango, otro joven macho, en La Reserva Natural Oropopo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En ocasiones no es posible liberar al mono con su tropa porque se desconoce cu\u00e1l es o el sitio donde se encontraban ya no es seguro y f\u00e1cilmente podr\u00eda reincidir en otro accidente. Si son hembras, pueden ser acogidas por otras tropas y si son machos, en los centros van formando tropas con los monos en recuperaci\u00f3n y m\u00e1s tarde se liberan juntos para que contin\u00faen con sus din\u00e1micas en el bosque.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July and August alone, Somos Congos, a local non-profit, attended 12 howler monkey accidents, in addition to a few others involving other species that are not counted in their monkey statistics but are of equal importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lack of rain, the destruction of habitat due to a lack of development planning and the fragmentation of biological corridors are the cause of the increase in accidents with wild animals. Some of the main species affected are those that live on the trees: monkeys and squirrels. What is this about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n We have asked Somos Congos and they explained that arboreal species, the ones living on trees, are very sensitive to loss of habitat and connectivity, using cables and even the ground when this happens. When using the cables they can be electrocuted, since a part of the electrical network is not isolated. Sometimes they also go down to the ground to be able to continue their routes and that is where they are in danger of being run over or attacked by dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are the solutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n To help these species continue to live in our area, a well-informed development must be carried out, respecting the existing forest and natural corridors as much as possible. It is essential to preserve what already exists since it is what the animals already know and it is where they find their food, shelter and rest, they are functional habitats. A forest regeneration process that starts now will take years to be functional, so the widespread idea of \u200b\u200b\u00bbcut one, plant ten\u00bb is not entirely accurate. It is always advisable to consult local experts if it is necessary to prune or cut down a tree. In addition, both arboreal and terrestrial animals can disperse seeds, which makes the plant species themselves also extend their habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are many terrestrial animals that lose their lives in collisions, so another of the solutions that are presented is to reduce speed when driving and respect the signs for wildlife crossings. Although sometimes the signage is insufficient, we must be aware of the large number of animals in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Somos Congos keeps a record of wildlife accidents and only this year (until August 1st) they have recorded 28 Howler monkey accidents, 24 due to electrocution. Among the other causes are dog attacks, possible poisonings and run overs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In these 28 accidents, 23 individuals have died, 79% of those reported. Some die instantly and some have to be euthanized at the rescue center due to the severity of their injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A rescue involves the mobilization of several people, many of the times volunteers from Somos Congos, who denounce that SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas), who should attend to these cases, lacks personnel (currently there is one official who attends to Jicaral, Lepanto, Paquera and C\u00f3bano) and the park rangers of Cabo Blanco, lack the budget for the maintenance and fuel of their vehicles. In fact, the non-profit association Somos Congos acquired last year, thanks to private donations, a vehicle that works as an ambulance and is authorized for this purpose. We need to remember that transporting wildlife is illegal in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n Many of the rescued animals were being transferred to Wild Sun Rescue in Cabuya, but this center is now full and cannot accept any more patients so the rescued animals are being transported to Rescate Wildlife (formerly Zooave) in Alajuela. Thanks to the recent collaboration between Somos Congos, SINAC and Costa Rica Green Airways, the animals are transported by plane in just 45 minutes from the south of the Nicoya peninsula to the Alajuela airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to transportation costs, the approximate cost per month for each animal in a rescue center is around 700,000 colones, about 1,200 US dollars depending on the severity of the injuries. Many of the animals, particularly the monkeys, if admitted at a very young age, can stay at the center for up to two years. These expenses are met privately by non-profit organizations such as Somos Congos and the rescue centers themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Daniel Guti\u00e9rrez is the president of Somos Congos and shares with us the harshness of the cases they deal with, \u00absometimes there is no other way than to put on the gloves and help the veterinarian in primary care, and it is done because of the adrenaline and anguish of seeing the monkey in that state. After that moment of tension, one goes down a lot emotionally but you have to continue because probably a day or two later you will have another case equal to or worse than the previous one\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The situation is critical and the voluntary efforts of local organizations are increasing to try to combat and prevent the destruction of the habitat of howler monkeys and other species.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n Within these reports there is also room for good news. In recent months 4 monkeys have been released back into the forest. Somos Congos tells us the story of Trini, the first Congo to fly from the peninsula to Alajuela due to a multiple electrocution accident in which his partner died and her baby continues to be hospitalized at Rescate Wildlife. Trini entered the center in March and among the different care and surgeries was the amputation of his right arm. Fortunately, he had a successful recovery and rehabilitation and on August 23rd he was able to fly back home where he was released together with Tango, another young male, in the Oropopo Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it is not possible to free the monkey with its troop because it is unknown which one it is or the place where they were is no longer safe and easily could recur in another accident.
