Jonathan Elizondo Orozco
www.jonathanelizondoorozco.com

Obras:

– El Decálogo: Ensayo.
– Spiro: Ensayo.
– Cambio de Planes: Ensayo. Jonathan Elizondo Orozco
www.jonathanelizondoorozco.com

For those who don’t know me, I should introduce myself briefly: I like to read. From my love of reading, my desire to write was born. From my desire to write, my aspiration to be read was derived; that is, I had to publish. After much struggle, my first book came out. Once I had it in my hands, I had no choice but to try to spread it. One thing led to another and bang!… There I was at the International Book Fair in Heredia. The adventure itself was a learning one. Since I don’t have trouble talking, meeting people comes naturally to me, so it was a pleasure to talk with so many strangers about my own project. But, to tell the truth, the most pleasant thing was meeting other Tico authors who, like me, were “pushing it.” Like in that video Blind Melon in which the little bee finds other little bees dancing in a pasture, I had just met a group of writers who were looking, like me, to sell their books and, above all, the ultimate goal of anyone who wants to be an author. : to be read.

This column was born from those encounters, both with the novelist, the short story writer, the poet and the poetess. With those beings of flesh and blood, and with their work. For a long time I have wanted to belong to a group of artists that seeks to produce current art that reflects the new realities that happen in the daily life of Costa Rica. With this I mean that, although I greatly adore and respect the Costa Rican literature of yesteryear, I feel that, as in the song of The Smiths: “«They don’t tell me anything about my life.» So I have always looked for the newest, what is done today, right now, as I write these lines. And there they were, seeking the space they deserve as protagonists and creators of our country’s imagination, the authors of many stories; alive and kicking.

As a result of my conversations with them, reading their books, discussing publications, bookstores and other accomplices that allow us to disseminate our work, the idea of reviewing their works was born. We should not wait until people are no longer with us to read and study them. All the authors who will appear in this column continue writing, publishing and trying to interpret the reality that surrounds us based on their style. So I consider it essential that readers, Costa Ricans and foreigners, update themselves and, together with me, begin to discover that wonderful world of contemporary Costa Rican writers.

The proposal is simple: I will review one book per month, so that you readers can gradually get to know what is out there, to experience a beautiful and rich side of our country: the universe of writers. They are not literary criticism, I simply want to lead you by the hand on a journey that allows you to choose which book or author draws your attention the most. I seek to give them advice and, of course, tell them where to get the works and update them with literary events in the country.

Let’s go to the second chapter:

Book: Mysterium Salutis
We are all murderers, victims and suicides at the same time.

Author:Jose Chacon

Language:Spanish.

The first thing that stands out about the book is its presentation. I bought the second edition, and I don’t know what the first one was like, but the truth is that the hardcover and the dust jacket it comes with, make it have presence. The cover is well designed, the size of the font and the margins ensure relaxed reading, and what I liked the most was the texture and color of the pages: yellow-toned paper that makes the eyes rest and is pleasant to the touch. In conclusion, for those of us who collect books and who hold them as admirable objects beyond their content, this book is a beauty. Although the saying tells us not to judge a book by its cover, for me it is part of the pleasures I find when buying them and, in this case, I was surprised, if I am honest, to find a Costa Rican author publishing with such high quality.

Let’s leave aside the physical aspects of the book and move on to its content. The second edition has a gift that the first does not give us: a reading guide. I read the book without using it, however, I managed to understand its usefulness and, above all, appreciate the additional lists such as, for example, the soundtrack of the book, and the explanation about unknown languages. Even if the guide given by the author is not followed, the gesture is appreciated and, in my opinion, increases the aesthetic value of the book.

Let’s go to the story: the title means «The mystery of salvation», and with it begins an investigative narrative that led to the discovery of parts of a human body in various embassies located in Tel Aviv. Since the discovery took place in different international territories (since that is the jurisdiction of embassies, according to international treaties), the characters who try to solve the mystery come from the most diverse origins: an English researcher from the New Scotland Yard, a Mexican who works with the Portuguese police, a Basque who was sent from Madrid to work as a representative of the Spanish delegation, and a representative of the Israeli Shabak, among others.

As the book delves into the outcome of the investigation, it begins to make jumps in time to tell us about protagonists of historical moments that were important for the development of religious trends whose roots are found in the Protestant Reformation. I am not going to delve into the details of this topic for two reasons: the book already makes a very interesting dive into the topic, so I do not want to give a preview; Second, the author has an extremely extensive knowledge of the subject, so it is a pleasure to read the development of the story based on the novel that he tells us and through which he guides us. Some may think that these chronological jumps become a bit confusing, however, I am in favor of the fact that readers are intelligent, and that an author cannot insult his readers by treating them with condescension. By this I mean that the effort that the reader must make to follow the parallel stories that develop in the book can be done by anyone with a minimal reading habit. Here, the reading guide at the end of the book is very useful, since there are many characters, of the most diverse nationalities and, what is even more complex, of historical moments that are separated from each other by one or several centuries.

To me this seemed like an invitation to continue reading, because I suspected, as was logical in the end, that everything had to do with the body parts that had been found a few centuries later, in Israel. So the challenge pays a lot. Little by little it is suspected that the crime must have something to do with religious motives. And this is where the book becomes very interesting, around the last third, when little by little the connection between all these different characters, places and times is revealed to us. We are shown the modus operandi, the motive for the crime and, finally, the culprit or perpetrators. But this confidence does not happen in a linear way, on the contrary, the various twists in the plot keep one entertained and eager to know the final result.

For those who like to read books about research, history and religion, this novel has it all. To tell the truth, it fills me with pride that a book of this type has been written in Costa Rica. I have the pleasure of knowing the author a little and of listening to him from time to time speak on some of the topics that he is passionate about. The amount of knowledge he possesses is immediately impressive; But also, over time, one becomes infected with his investigative will and his love for all those topics through which he navigates so comfortably. So comfortable that one, who is a simple visitor, when reading or listening to it, feels at home. This novel is another example of that vocation.

Online store

Author’s website

Author’s Instagram

Work:

– The Decalogue: Essay.
