Reseñas de escritores costarricenses contemporáneos

Para quien no me conoce debo presentarme someramente: me gusta leer. A partir de mi gusto por la lectura, nació mi deseo de escribir. De mi voluntad de escribir, se derivó mi aspiración de ser leído; o sea, debía publicar. Después de mucho batallar salió mi primer libro. Una vez que lo tuve en mis manos, no quedó otra que tratar de divulgarlo. Una cosa llevó a la otra y ¡zas!… allá estaba yo en la Feria Internacional del Libro en Heredia. La aventura en sí fue de aprendizaje. Como no me cuesta hablar, conocer gente me sale natural, así que fue un gusto conversar con tanto desconocido sobre un proyecto propio. Pero, a decir verdad, lo más placentero fue encontrarme con otros autores ticos que, como yo, la estaban “pulseando”. Como en aquel video de Blind Melon en el cual la abejita encuentra otras abejitas bailando en un potrero, acababa de conocer a un grupo de escritores y escritoras que buscaban, igual que yo, vender sus libros y, sobre todo, el fin último de cualquier persona que desea ser autor o autora: ser leído.

Esta columna nace a partir de esos encuentros, tanto con el y la novelista, él y la cuentista, el poeta y la poetisa. Con esos seres de carne y hueso, y con su obra. Durante mucho tiempo he querido pertenecer a un grupo de artistas que busque producir un arte actual que refleje las nuevas realidades que suceden en el día a día de Costa Rica. Con esto quiero decir que, a pesar de que adoro y respeto muchísimo la literatura costarricense de antaño, siento que, como en la canción de The Smiths: “No me dicen nada sobre mi vida”. Así que he buscado siempre lo más nuevo, lo que se hace hoy día, ya, en este momento que escribo estas líneas. Y ahí estaban, buscando el espacio que se merecen como protagonistas y creadores del imaginario de nuestro país, los autores de muchos relatos; vivitos y coleando.

A raíz de mis conversaciones con ellos, de leer sus libros, de dialogar sobre publicaciones, librerías y demás cómplices que nos permiten divulgar nuestra obra, es que nace la idea de reseñar sus obras. No debemos esperar a que la gente no esté más con nosotros para leerlos y estudiarlos. Todos los autores que aparecerán en esta columna siguen escribiendo, publicando e intentando interpretar la realidad que nos rodea a partir de su estilo. Así que considero indispensable que los lectores, ticos y extranjeros, se actualicen y, junto conmigo, empiecen a descubrir ese mundo maravilloso de los escritores costarricenses contemporáneos.

La propuesta es simple: iré reseñando un libro por mes, para que ustedes lectores, puedan ir conociendo poco a poco lo que está ahí afuera, para experimentar un lado precioso y rico de nuestro país: el universo de los escritores. No son críticas literarias, simplemente deseo conducirlos de la mano en una jornada que les permita escoger cuál libro o cuál autor les llama más la atención. Busco darles consejos y, por supuesto, indicarles adónde conseguir las obras y actualizarlos con los eventos literarios del país.

Comencemos:

El título del libro no entrega mucho, a no ser que sea explicado y así es hecho en el prólogo. Trece historias, algunas ficticias, otras no. Lo cierto es que el hilo conductor de ellas es su propia diversidad. Desde su estilo (algunas son narradas en primera persona, otras en tercera), hasta su contenido, ninguno de los relatos de este pequeño compendio va a defraudar. ¿Por qué Ruleta Rusa? Porque, como el arriesgadísimo juego homónimo, el lector toma el riesgo de encontrarse con historias cuyos temas y formas son diametralmente opuestos. Se podría, y tal vez sea la mejor manera de leerlo, escoger el orden de manera aleatoria, y el efecto sería ese: el de no tener ni idea de lo que viene hasta que nos vemos consumidos en la lectura.

Ahora bien, como todo en la vida misma, la idea es que el cuento que escogemos para ser leído nos sorprenda. A mí algunos me encantaron, otros me gustaron y otros no tanto, pero ya eso es cuestión de gustos. Lo cierto es que sí estamos frente a un pequeño revólver de trece tiros, del cual no sabemos si saldrá una bala o una banderita pintada con la onomatopeya “¡Bang!”.

Personalmente creo que los relatos se pueden agrupar en tres categorías: aquellos tranquilos que nos narran una serie de eventos, tal vez fantásticos, tal vez realistas, pero cuya lectura podemos hacer sin poner de vuelta el café en la mesa; encontramos también los que nos pueden choquear por su estilo crudo y extremadamente sincero de exponer situaciones existentes y posibles, las cuales la doble moral costarricense nos recomienda callar. Esto hay que aplaudirlo de pie, y, aunque no lo hagamos, de fijo ponemos la taza del café en la mesa un par de veces para terminar la lectura. Finalmente, están aquellos relatos que nos sorprenden de entrada, por el estilo desenmascarado con el cual describe eventos que la mayoría de veces no deseamos saber que suceden. Es decir, por la doble condición de lo escrito: su contenido y su forma. Durante estos, pondremos el café en la mesa, y no lo volveremos a tocar, pues el deseo de llegar hasta el final en un solo tirón nos desvanece la voluntad de hacer cualquier otra cosa. En mi caso, imagino que estos son los que tenían la bala cargada para mí.

Pensé en listar a cuál grupo pertenece cada uno de ellos, pero caí en cuenta que estaría dando un adelanto que muy posiblemente el propio autor no desearía dar. A la ruleta rusa no se juega a medias. Así que le dejo a usted lector o lectora la labor de decidir cuál de los relatos contenidos en el libro hará que su mente, metafóricamente, explote en un sinfín de pedacitos. A mí particularmente me tocó el titulado Diario de un vagabundo, que de una manera poco sutil narra realidades de la ciudad en la que crecí y la que amo como se ama de verdad: a pesar de todos sus defectos.

Lean el libro. Aventúrense. En el fondo creo que les puede decir muchísimo no solo sobre lo que verdaderamente sucede en nuestro país; también del modo como vemos las cosas y, sobre todo, les puede dar indicios de los parámetros morales que ustedes poseen. En esto, no supongan que se trata de la obra nihilista de quien defiende la ausencia de reglas éticas, puedo decir que Álvaro, su autor, dista mucho de ser una persona con ese perfil. Su bondad y su buen trato con los otros lo alejan de aquellos que abogan por el “todo vale”. Lo que creo que le sucedió es que su sensibilidad lo llevó a mostrarnos realidades que muchos otros no se atreven a dar por conocer o, aun peor, las esconden debajo de la alfombra.

Reviews of contemporary Costa Rican writers

For those who don’t know me, I should introduce myself briefly: I like to read. From my love of reading, my desire to write was born. From my desire to write, my aspiration to be read was derived; that is, I had to publish. After much struggle, my first book came out. Once I had it in my hands, I had no choice but to try to spread it. One thing led to another and bang!… There I was at the International Book Fair in Heredia. The adventure itself was a learning one. Since I don’t have any trouble talking to others, meeting people comes naturally to me, so it was a pleasure to talk with so many strangers about my own project. But, to tell the truth, the most pleasant thing was meeting other Tico authors who, like me, were “pushing it.” Like in that Blind Melon video in which the little bee finds other little bees dancing in a pasture, I had just met a group of writers who were looking, like me, to sell their books and, above all, they were seeking also the ultimate goal of anyone who wants to be an author: to be read.

This column was born from those encounters, both with the novelists, the short story writers, the poet and the poetess. With those beings of flesh and blood, and with their work. For a long time I have wanted to belong to a group of artists that aims to produce current art that reflects the new realities that happen in the daily life of Costa Rica. With this I mean that, although I greatly adore and respect the Costa Rican literature of yesteryear, I feel that, as in the song of The Smiths: “«It says nothing to me about my life.» So, I have always looked for the newest expressions, what is been done today, right now, as I write these lines. And there they were, seeking the space they deserve as protagonists and creators of our country’s imagination, the authors of many stories; alive and kicking.

As a result of my conversations with them, reading their books, discussing publications, bookstores and about other accomplices that allow us to disseminate our writings, the idea of ​​reviewing their works was born. We should not wait until people are no longer with us to read and study about them. All the authors who will appear in this column continue writing, publishing and trying to interpret the reality that surrounds us based on their own style. So I consider it essential that readers, Costa Ricans and foreigners, update themselves and, together with me, begin to discover that wonderful world of contemporary Costa Rican writers.

The proposal is simple: I will review one book per month, so that you readers can gradually get to know what is out there, to experience a beautiful and rich side of our country: the universe of writers. These lines will not be literary criticism, I simply want to lead you by the hand on a journey that allows you to choose which book or author draws your attention the most. I seek to give you advice and, of course, tell you where to get their works and update you with literary events in the country.

Let’s start:

The title of the book does not give much away, unless it is explained and this is done in the prologue. Thirteen stories, some fictional, some not. The truth is that their common thread is their own diversity. From its style (some are narrated in the first person, others in the third), to its content, none of the stories in this small compendium will disappoint you. Why Russian Roulette? Because, like the very risky homonym game, the reader takes the chances of encountering stories whose themes and forms are diametrically opposed. You could, and perhaps is the best way to read it, choose the order randomly, and the effect would be that: not having any idea what is coming until we are immersed in the text.

Now, like everything in life itself, the idea is that the story that we choose to read surprises us. I loved some, others I liked and others not so much, but that’s a matter of taste. The truth is that we are dealing with a small thirteen-shot revolver, from which we do not know if a bullet or a little flag painted with the onomatopoeia “Bang!” will come out.

Personally, I believe that the stories can be grouped into three categories: quiet ones that tell us a series of events, perhaps fantastic, perhaps realistic, but whose reading we can do without putting the coffee back on the table; We also find those that may shock us due to their crude and extremely sincere style of exposing existing and possible situations, which the Costa Rican double standard on moral issues recommends us to keep silent about. This must be applauded standing up, and, even if we don’t do it, we will always put the coffee cup on the table a couple of times to finish the reading. Finally, there are those stories that surprise us from the start, due to the unmasked style with which they describe events that most of the time we do not want to know happen. That is, due to the double condition of what is written: its content and its form. During the reading of these ones, we will put the coffee on the table, and we will not touch it again, because the desire to get to the end in a single pull makes us lose the will to do anything else. In my case, I imagine these are the ones who had the bullet loaded for me.

I thought about listing which group each of them belongs to, but I realized that I would be giving a preview that very possibly the author himself would not want to give. Russian roulette is not played halfway. So I leave it to you, the reader, to decide which of the stories contained in the book will make your mind, metaphorically, explode into endless pieces. I was particularly touched by the one titled Diary of a wanderer, which in a not very subtle way narrates realities of the city in which I grew up and which I love as one truly loves: despite all its flaws.

Read the book. Adventure yourself. Deep down I think it can tell you a lot, not only about what is really happening in our country; also about the way we see things and, above all, it can give you indications of the moral parameters that you possess. In this subject, do not assume that the book is the nihilistic work of someone who defends the absence of ethical rules. I can say that Álvaro, its author, is far from being a person with that profile. His kindness and good treatment of others distance him from those who advocate “anything goes.” What I think happened to him is that his sensitivity led him to show us realities that many others do not dare to let us know or, even worse, hide them under the rug.
