Los estudiantes no pueden acceder al currículo completo por falta de instalaciones.
Hace unos días Santa Teresa Hoy tuvo la oportunidad de reunirse con doña Elsie Hidalgo Sánchez, directora de la Escuela de Santa Teresa desde 2021. En esta reunión la señora Hidalgo nos compartía la situación de la escuela, en la que están matriculados 261 niños y niñas que tienen que acudir en dos turnos porque no hay aulas ni profesores suficientes para que todos puedan pasar el día entero en el centro.
En la actualidad la mitad de los niños acuden de 7am a 11.30am y la otra mitad de 12.10pm a 4.40pm lo que pone en una situación complicada a los padres y madres que trabajan en jornada completa y además, en ocasiones, hermanos de la misma familia tienen horarios diferentes. Esto, explica doña Elsie, se traduce en un gran absentismo escolar y además desventaja en cuanto al aprendizaje ya que no tienen tiempo de cubrir el currículo completo.
Otra situación que viven tanto estudiantes como docentes es el intenso calor que se registra dentro de las aulas. Según nos explicó la directora de la institución, el MEP (Ministerio de Educación Pública) provee a la escuela de un presupuesto que se destina en su mayor parte a alimentos y transportes, dejando un restante que se utiliza para la adquisición de materiales didácticos y de limpieza.
No existe un presupuesto destinado específicamente a la climatización del centro por lo que con colectas han podido adquirir algunos equipos de aire acondicionado. El año pasado una empresa privada les donó uno pero por no tener la potencia necesaria, no funcionaba bien y lo están desinstalando. El último fue donado por un conocido hotel de la zona y esperan instalarlo en las próximas semanas. Según nos explicaba doña Elsie, es posible ver claramente cómo el rendimiento y la proactividad de los estudiantes en aulas con aire acondicionado es mayor que en aquellas que no lo tienen. En la actualidad están necesitando dos equipos más.
Al terminar la reunión preguntamos cuáles serían otras necesidades que la escuela tiene y doña Elsie fue clara “necesitamos 5 aulas más para que todos los estudiantes puedan tener jornada completa en la escuela, recibir tres comidas (desayuno, almuerzo y snack) y también optar a asignaturas del currículo como deporte, arte, robótica… y puedan desarrollar gustos y habilidades para los que ahora no tienen la oportunidad”. La escuela tiene el espacio para construir estas cinco aulas, y con más aulas, el MEP puede destinar más profesores a la zona y también aumentar el presupuesto.

Esta nota nos invita a reflexionar sobre cómo en un pueblo en el que cada día se compran, se venden y se construyen nuevas residencias de lujo valoradas en millones de dólares, la escuela local no puede acoger a los niños y niñas a tiempo completo.

The Santa Teresa public school needs at least five more classrooms
Students cannot access the full curriculum due to lack of facilities.
Some days ago Santa Teresa Hoy had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Elsie Hidalgo Sánchez, Principal of the Santa Teresa School since 2021. At this meeting, Mrs. Hidalgo shared with us the situation of the school, in which 261 boys and girls are enrolled but have to attend in two shifts because there are not enough classrooms or teachers for everyone to spend the entire day at the center.
Currently, half of the children come from 7am to 11.30am and the other half from 12.10pm to 4.40pm, which puts parents who work full-time in a complicated situation. Sometimes, siblings of the same family have different schedules. This, explains Mrs. Elsie, translates into high school absenteeism and also a disadvantage in terms of learning since they do not have time to cover the entire curriculum.
Another situation that both students and teachers experience is the intense heat that occurs inside the classrooms. As the director of the institution explained to us, the MEP (Ministry of Public Education) provides the school with a budget that is mostly allocated to food and transportation, leaving a remainder that is used for the acquisition of teaching materials and cleaning.
There is no budget specifically allocated to the air conditioning of the center, so with collections they have been able to purchase some air conditioning equipment. Last year a private company donated one to them but because it did not have the necessary power, it did not work well and they are uninstalling it. The last one was donated by a well-known hotel in the area and they hope to install it in the coming weeks. As Mrs. Elsie explained to us, it is possible to clearly see how the performance and proactivity of students in classrooms with air conditioning is greater than in those that do not have it. They are currently needing two more air conditioning units.
At the end of the meeting we asked what other needs the school has and Ms. Elsie was clear “we need 5 more classrooms so that all students can have a full day at school, receive three meals (breakfast, lunch and snack) and also opt for curriculum subjects such as sports, art, robotics… and can develop tastes and skills for which they now do not have the opportunity.» The school has the space to build these five classrooms, and with more classrooms, the MEP can allocate more teachers to the area and also increase the budget.
